Dramatic walk off home run seals Capitals double over champion Mets
A walk off home run by rookie London Capitals’ outfielder Josh Marriott sealed a sweep of the London Mets at Finsbury Park on Sunday.
Pitchers had dominated the second game before Marriott stepped up to the plate at the bottom of the seventh inning against Mets starter Tim Brown and crushed the ball over the deep right centre fence.
Capitals starter Johan Villanueva had limited the Mets to just one run and struck out five Mets on the way to his win.
The 2023 NBL runners up took the first game 13-3 with Marriott in fine form with the bat driving in five runs off four hits as the Capitals scored five runs in the fourth to breaks a 3-3 ball game.
Pitcher Masa Hasiguchi continued his great 2024 performances with seven strikeouts over six innings pitched with no earned runs. His ERA sits at just 0.68 with 33 strikeouts over 31 innings pitched.
"The team really put together our best baseball of the season. A bad defensive inning aside, we battled hard early against great pitching and really hit well in Game One,” said Rhys Wilson, the Capitals Head Coach. “Game Two was a fantastic pitching duel with some big defensive plays behind Johan Villanueva especially from Kenta Kido at shortstop. Having a very hot bat all day, Josh come up with a chance to win it and the rookie drilled a fastball and the rest is history."
The Bournemouth Bears made the long trip to Sheffield to take on the Bruins and came away with a split.
Bears pitcher Jose Lopez was dominant from the mound as the Bournemouth side clinched a 6-2 win.
The scores were tied at 2-2 but three doubles from Lopez, Jesus Pestana and Daniel Myrmell game the Bears an unassailable four run lead in the seventh.
The Bruins took revenge in the second game to win 4-1 behind a brilliant 10 strike out performance from Ray Sass.
After going one run up in the second innings, the Bruins scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth led by a RBI double from infielder Daniel Moran.
The result of the London derby means Essex Arrows are sitting at the top of the National Baseball League two games ahead of the London Capitals.
The London Mets are currently third with BC Vetra in the fourth play off spot just 1.5 games ahead of the Bruins.
Next Sunday, the Bears travel to the Capitals with the chance to move off the bottom of the table.
