National Baseball League takes over Farnham Park
The six teams from the British Baseball Federation’s (BBF) National Baseball League (NBL) took over the National Baseball & Softball Complex at Farnham Park on Sunday.
The day was part of the NBL’s regular season and featured the top British teams playing six games on two purpose built diamonds with each team playing twice.
“It was great to be able to showcase some of the best baseball talent we have in Britain at Farnham Park,” said Chris Carter, the BBF Senior Leagues Commissioner. The national championships will be back at Farnham Park in August and September and the BBF Summer Cup on 22nd and 23rd July will see 24 teams from across the country be at the complex for the weekend.”
Joint league leaders Essex Arrows beat East London Latin Boys 13-3 in a game which saw the Essex team complete a rare defensive triple play.
In their second game, Angel Chira, the Arrows’ right fielder hit a solo home run in the team’s 13-3 victory over the Sheffield Bruins to complete a perfect day for the title contenders.
The London Mets, defending national champions, joint league leaders and fresh from a tournament victory in Europe, also won both their games beating Herts Falcons 6-1 and London Capitals 12-6.
Mets pitcher, Mitchell Von Scheidt, struck out six Falcons to claim the win in the first game.
Sheffield Bruins claimed a 14-9 victory over the Latin Boys behind solid pitching and great defense which included a vital double play which ended a rally.
In the final game of the day, the Capitals and the Falcons battled hard but the London team took the honours 9-6 with crucial runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Capitals Outfielder Johan Villanueva led the way with the bat with two hits while driving in two runs.
The six teams return this coming Sunday for the second series of regular season games to be held at Farnham Park. The first game, between London Capitals and Essex Arrows starts at 10.00am. Spectators are welcome.
