GB Women have their eyes on the prize as European Championships draw closer

By BBF

With the WBSC Women’s Baseball European championships only a day away, GB Women have touched down on Czech ground.

From Thursday, 14 August, to Sunday, 17 August, Head Coach Pietro Sollecito’s team will be looking to secure their first European medal in Hluboká, Czech Republic.

During the first three days, the four competing teams – GB, France, Czech Republic and Netherlands – will be playing each other in six round-robin games.

The top two teams will then battle it out for the title – and a ticket to the 2026 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Qualifiers – in a final match on Sunday.

Great Britain Women are off to a tough start to the tournament at 14:00 (13:00 BST) on Thursday when they are facing France, who will be looking to make it three in a row after winning the last two Women’s Euros.

They will then have about 24 hours to get ready for match number two before they go up against host nation Czechia at 18:00 (17:00 BST) on Friday. The Czech women were runners-up in the 2022 Women’s Euros, losing to France in the final and will want to prove a point on home soil.

On Saturday, GB Women will be playing their only game as a home team during the round-robin part of the tournament. At 14:00 (13:00 BST) they will take on the Netherlands. The Dutch women came second and third during the 2019 and 2022 tournaments respectively and have never won a European title – although they have made it to five Women’s Baseball World Cups since 2010.

While GB Women were unable to secure a medal first-try when they took part in the tournament for the first time three years ago, they are now confident that they have improved since – and have their eyes set on gold.

“The whole team has been putting all the work in throughout all of last year and all of winter”, said Catcher Artie Herbert (Bournemouth Bears & SWWBL Serpents).

“The team will be going in with a champion’s mindset. We’re hoping to win every at bat, win every battle out in the field and take every single game.

“They’re a group of really talented, really dedicated athletes and being around them always makes me want to push myself and be stronger and be better.”

Head Coach, Pietro Sollecito, added: “We’re incredibly excited. The team are ready, they’ve been working hard and it is an absolute pleasure to be with them in the Czech Republic for the European Championships.

“It’s not going to be easy, but I have full confidence that the team will be able to bring a medal home for Great Britain.”
