Award and Merit Scheme
The British Baseball Federation Award and Merit Scheme is designed to promote accountability, fairness and positive development across the sport. The Federation has a responsibility to uphold standards of conduct and integrity, and the scheme provides a structured way to monitor behaviour, identify concerns early and support clubs before issues escalate. It also helps protect umpires, scorers and volunteers from poor behaviour while giving the Federation better visibility of recurring problems.
The scheme introduces a cumulative penalty points system for clubs. It does not replace existing rules or disciplinary processes, but works alongside them to track both minor and major breaches over time. Points are applied where actions or omissions create additional administrative workload for volunteers or delay Federation duties due to missing, late or inaccurate information. Examples include incorrect scorecards, use of unqualified umpires, unregistered participants or misconduct on social media.
Alongside accountability, the scheme also recognises good governance. Clubs with the lowest points totals receive rewards, including free or discounted membership for the following season. This reinforces that discipline, organisation and respect are valued as highly as on-field performance.
Where concerns arise, sanctions escalate in stages, beginning with a warning and opportunity to respond, progressing to fines, forfeits or possible suspension for persistent non-compliance. The intention is preventative rather than punitive, encouraging clubs to correct issues early and avoid repeated breaches.
The long-term aim is simple. Consistent standards, transparent processes and early intervention create a better environment for everyone involved in British Baseball. Clubs can support this by following the BBF Seniors Handbook, encouraging members to attend Level 6 umpire training, adhering to the Codes of Conduct and actively promoting the RESPECT campaign.
