The inaugural Women’s Pro Baseball League draft has concluded, with GB Senior Women’s National Team player Laura Hirai selected by Boston.
Laura, a well-known and widely respected figure within the British baseball and softball communities, was chosen in the fifth round and is the only European player on Boston’s roster.
After helping GB Women secure European Baseball gold this past summer, Hirai went on to join GB Softball in European competition, where she added a bronze medal to her achievements.
“British baseball is blessed to have that rare combination of grit and talent that is Laura Hirai.” said GB Women Head Coach Pietro Sollecito “I have stopped being amazed by her accomplishments in the sport. The WPBL is exactly where Laura belongs and we are so excited that this opportunity now exists for all those Lauras who dream the biggest dreams!”
Laura remains the only female athlete ever to represent GB at U18 baseball, having pitched at the European Championships in 2015 and 2017.
“Being drafted to Boston for the inaugural Women’s Pro Baseball League feels nothing short of surreal.” said Laura “I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the British baseball community, my family and friends, my teammates and coaches for their passion, belief and support. I’m proud to represent GB in the WPBL and I hope my journey reminds others in the UK that no dream is too distant. If my story helps even one young player to chase what sets their heart on fire, then this achievement becomes so much bigger than me.”
Boston will compete in the Women’s Pro Baseball League alongside teams from New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The seven-week season is set to begin in August 2026.
A huge congratulations to Laura on her continued success.
