Toucans Progress to Final and Bruins Crowned WBL Champions

After last weekend’s postponement, the NBL semi-final between the Herts Toucans and Essex Arrows took place this morning, streamed live on the talkSPORT YouTube channel.

Herts pitcher Masa Hashiguchi held the Arrows scoreless through four innings, with the Toucans leading 1-0 heading into the 5th. The Arrows turned to their bullpen, but gave up eight more runs, pushing the Toucans to a 9-0 lead. Essex finally found some rhythm at the plate, pulling back three runs. Relief pitcher Christopher Mercedes then kept the Toucans quiet in the 6th, while the Arrows added four more runs to close the gap to just two heading into the final inning.

The Toucans responded with two insurance runs before Hashiguchi shut things down, allowing only one runner to reach base and sealing their place in the final against the London Mets. The win also guarantees European Baseball for Herts in 2026.

Before the NBL final, the Women’s Baseball League final took place between the season’s top two teams, the Sheffield Bruins and London Mayhem.

The Bruins edged ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the 3rd, before breaking the game open against Mayhem starter Gabriella Sassoli, piling on nine runs to take a 10-run lead. Bruins pitcher Kirstie Wright stayed dominant, allowing just one run in the 4th, while Sheffield’s hitters extended the lead by another four. Mayhem needed four runs in the 5th to avoid the mercy rule but managed only two, giving Sheffield the win and the WBL crown once again.

Game 1 of the best-of-three NBL final saw a tight battle between the Toucans and the table-topping London Mets. After two and a half scoreless innings, the Mets struck first with four runs in the bottom of the 3rd. The Toucans immediately hit back with four of their own in the top of the 4th to even things up. The Mets regained the lead with a run in the bottom half, and Mitsuhrio Watanabe closed the game with the tying run stranded on third in the 5th to give London a 1-0 series lead heading into Game 2.
