RESPECT Campaign

By BBF in Home Page, News

Over the next two weekends, baseball teams across the country will celebrate their opening days of the ’26 season. We’d like to remind players, coaches, and spectators about the RESPECT Campaign.

This offseason, 310 newly qualified Level 6 umpires completed courses held nationwide, bringing the total number of qualified umpires in Britain to 518. These new officials, along with those already qualified, deserve respect from everyone involved in the game. Without their willingness to stand behind home plate, there would be no baseball.

Baseball is more than just a game. It is a community built on respect, discipline and fair play. At the heart of every game is the umpire — the person who makes the game possible. How we treat the umpire reflects who we are as teams, coaches, parents and supporters.

When players argue, coaches shout, or spectators heckle calls, the impact goes beyond a single play:

  • For the Umpires: Constant criticism leads to stress, burnout and officials leaving the sport. Many umpires, especially at grassroots and youth levels, step away because the environment has become too hostile.
  • For the Game: Without umpires, we cannot play scheduled games. Losing officials undermines baseball at all levels.
  • For the Players: A team focused on disputing calls loses focus on playing. Poor behaviour on the field and sidelines leads to discipline issues, negative experiences and fewer chances to develop skills.

When we back our umpires and show respect, the game thrives. An umpire who feels valued is more confident, contributing to fairer, smoother and more enjoyable games for everyone. Showing respect sets a standard for younger players and helps keep baseball welcoming for all participants.

We urge every player, coach and supporter to lead by example. Be known for your passion for baseball and your conduct off the field. Challenge unsporting behaviour when you see it. Remember: the umpire is a human being doing their best for the sport we love.
