In collaboration with Baseball Softball Gwalia, the Women’s National Team visited Cardiff this past weekend to deliver a training session for girls and boys from the national youth baseball community, with a focus on developing their baseball skills.
National team players led a range of stations, giving the children the opportunity to build their fundamental knowledge and confidence in fielding, throwing, pitching, catching and hitting. The session was designed to be both fun and educational, allowing young players to learn directly from senior athletes while improving the key skills needed for the game.
“Volunteering to help coach at last weekend’s session was a great way to share the love of the game, engage with, and help young players have an enjoyable learning experience,” said GB’s Laura Bailes. “Events like this are vital for developing the sport and strengthening the community and they benefit adult player/volunteers as well; giving you a fresh perspective, whilst sharpening skills and communication. I hope the participants reach out to their local clubs to explore more opportunities throughout the season, and I hope more adult players turn to coaching and pay it forward.”
The session concluded with a mini game of baseball, where players had the chance to put their newly developed skills into practice in a fun and supportive environment. It was a fitting end to a day that combined high-quality coaching with plenty of enthusiasm and energy.
The session in Cardiff once again showcased the Women’s National Team’s desire to help develop the sport of baseball in the UK, particularly at grassroots level. By giving their time and experience, the players continue to play an important role in inspiring the next generation and strengthening the pathway for young athletes across the country.
“It was fantastic to have the Women’s National Team back in Cardiff. The children were buzzing afterwards. We could see the players improve over the course of the clinic, which was great to see,” said Holly Ireland, Director, Baseball Softball Gwalia. “What we mostly care about is that we have smiles on faces, and that’s exactly what happened. We are incredibly grateful to the WNT, and look forward to a continued relationship with them.”
As part of the WNT’s drive to raise funds for their World Cup Qualifiers this year, the team is hosting a fundraising event on 21 March in Cardiff, once again aiming to support and develop potential future generations of the WNT. The event will focus on helping girls aged 16U progress their skills and take the next steps towards becoming elite players. It is a fantastic opportunity for young athletes to train with national team players and gain valuable experience in a high-quality coaching environment.
Girls under 16 can book for the event, which will be held at Ocean Park Arena, via Eventbrite. Tickets cost £60.
